Documentary | What is manhood? A new masculine concept DW Documentaries
Being male means being tough, rational, unemotional and never crying. But is this true, or are they stereotypes that harm men and women equally? Men today want to define the male concept in a new way.
An increasing number of men and women wish there was a new image of masculinity. Science says they are right: boys are still trained not to respond to and suppress their emotions, in order to become strong and independent. But it hurts boys, and later men. They feel guilty when they have feelings that are considered feminine or weak, and they don't feel connected to the people around them. Men throw themselves into risky activities, care less about their health, commit more suicide and die earlier than women. This is an individual problem, but it is also a social problem. Is there a direct correlation between feeling shy in men, feeling “unacceptable” feelings, being like a “girl”, and the outbreak of violence? And why does society still find it difficult to accept sympathy and tenderness as male strengths? What is the role of women in making this stereotype of men entrenched so strongly?
This documentary does not address the issue of conflict between men and women, but rather presents a long-awaited social and political debate. A debate that transcends old beliefs and provides a new form of interaction between the sexes.
