Good news for people suffering from neurological disorders: a new discovery suggests a promising cure.
Researchers from Moscow State University, together with their colleagues from the Union “SCALLOP”, have discovered new proteins that can help in the treatment of certain neurological diseases such as schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease and alcoholism. The university’s communication department revealed that scientists have identified 283 specific areas in the genome whose variations influence the levels of protein biomarkers associated with neurological diseases. In addition, the research team has for the first time determined the role of 174 of these sites in the development of these biomarkers. In this regard, Anna Timushuk, a researcher at the Institute for Advanced Research on Problems of Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems at Moscow State University, said that “the research team also identified 13 new potential targets for the treatment of diseases related to neurological disorders, such as schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease, and alcoholism.” It is important to note that proteins present in blood plasma come from various tissues and cell types and influence a diverse range of biological processes in the body. Some of these proteins act as biomarkers for the development of diseases, including neurological diseases. Expanding this list of proteins helps improve the accuracy of diagnostics and the effectiveness of treatments.
